We've both spent time away from skating and have come back. I know there are things that I really appreciate about it when I'm not around it and things I really hate about it when I am. Maybe hate is too strong, let's say really find great discomfort in. Did you find this to be true when you started skating a lot again?

Yes I agree. It's like a love / hate relationship. When I was away from skating I would only wish to be in a 10 hour van ride to some random town going to battle a trick just to end up not getting it and then being so sore the next day it would hurt to walk. People might think that's the bad part but to me that's the love. People might think that it's all about the money, the contracts, and the fame but that's the part that I find discomforting. That's the stuff that will pull you away.

I remember being a kid, but still older than you, and watching old Powell videos with you and Rudy and Gabriel and Paulo. You guys had such an impact on me that even now, almost 20 years later I drive by the spots you guys skated in those videos and think about it. I mean, I live within 2 miles of almost every spot in your part. Never in a million years would I have guessed that would have ever happened. My question is, if someone were to tell you about everything that has happened in between then and now, what would surprise you the most. About skating? Life? Price of Gasoline, whatever?

It would surprise me that us having fun skating is now a part of history in our industry. Also, I'd be surprised that at one point in my life I ended up being one of those examples of getting caught up in the excessive partying lifestyle of skateboarding. And I'd be surprised to know that I made it out of it.

Would you rather be poor and a little crazy yet inspiring to a lot of people or happy and middle class and no one care about what you think or what you do?

I would like to start off poor and a little crazy and end up happy and middle class.
